How-To Books!!!

Our Writer's Workshop focus for the month of February is on writing How-To books.  Last week I read many How-To books aloud.  We read about how to make toast, a bird feeder, sock puppets, going camping, making a birthday surprise, and making a bird.  We will continue to read many How-To books for the next two weeks.

Last week we generated a huge list of things we know how to do and practiced telling how to do those things with our writing partners.  We told the process using our fingers, saying, "First...Next...Then...Finally".

Today, everyone made a How-To book in class.  Everyone worked so hard on their books !!!! It was so fun reading what they wrote!  We will be making How-To books for the rest of the month.

I'd like to share one with you so you get the idea.
How to Make a Valentine

First you get some paper.
Next, find some ribbon.

Then, get some scissors and fold the paper and
cut it into a heart.
Finally, give it to someone.

Pen Pals

Our class has started a pen-pal relationship with kindergarten students from Atkinson Elementary School in North Andover, Ma.  We wrote to them and told them about ourselves.  We wrote a question asking what each student liked to do.  We were so excited to receive our replies and they even included a picture of themselves!!!  The letters were sent home in Family Folders on Thursday.  We will be writing back this coming week.

Welcome Williams-Cone Wigglers

This week we were introduced to the Williams-Cone Wigglers.  The Wigglers are red worms that turn food scraps and paper into soil that we will use in the Children's Garden (Vermicomposting).  Our class will be feeding and taking care of them this month.
